MISSION

to serve as a tool for the exchange of information about Ontario's culture, history, built and natural heritage, archaeology and the environment.

MANDATE

  • to provide a "first stop" for anyone seeking information on Ontario's heritage
  • to serve as a tool for the exchange of Ontario's heritage news
  • to build a network of links to Ontario's heritage websites
  • to raise public interest and awareness in Ontario's heritage
  • to promote Ontario's heritage research and education
  • to encourage partnerships for the exchange of news and information

BACKGROUND

In February 2002, an exploratory event, "What's Happening to Heritage", was held at the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto. Attending were representatives from architecture, archaeology, museums, urban and interior design, art, law, journalism as well as authors, historians, academics, municipal heritage committee' representatives and politicians.

Soon after Margaret McBurney and Margaret Lyons (former members of the Toronto Preservation Board)* met with several experienced and knowledgeable people, prominent in the heritage community. They agreed that communication between heritage groups in the province would benefit from a web-based information-sharing network. With their encouragement, the not-for-profit ONTARIO HERITAGE CONNECTION SOCIETY INC. was formed and the volunteer based network was launched.

Early in August 2006 we were awarded a grant by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to further our mission and mandate.
